Think of a wheel. If essential nonprofit, public, and private sector groups are the spokes, and the market is the hub, MarketShare is the rim that runs around the community gathering everyone together.

 

MarketShare helps make a career in food accessible to under-resourced entrepreneurs by securing affordable start-up space that comes with key resources, guidance, and an entire community gathered in support.

We work with local constituent groups and design consultants to visualize a new market that is shared widely through digital media and direct grassroots public engagement. MarketShare coordinates service agreements with nonprofit partner organizations to do what they do best, from vendor recruitment to business incubation to culinary training. We drive the campaign to raise philanthropic capital support for construction and facilitate the negotiation of favorable lease terms for the incubator space. Finally, we help ensure smooth operations at the newly opened market, working with vendors from incubation through graduation as they become fully independent food businesses.

Philip Deng

Executive Director

Philip is the visionary behind MarketShare's innovative approach in utilizing grassroots organizing strategies gleaned from his experience in campaign politics to motivate entire communities to build lasting public institutions for the common good. Throughout his career working on three continents and Oceania in the nonprofit and public sectors, he has demonstrated a particular deftness in crossing cultures to unite diverse communities to solve shared problems and generate value for all. From posts that include remote coral atolls in the Marshall Islands, to major metropolitan centers in China, to local Seattle neighborhoods,  Philip's recognition of potential in all people, value in all cultures, and power in food to bring us together, inspired him to found MarketShare.

Leigh Momii

President

Leigh began her career in the aerospace industry, designing, configuring, and building custom software solutions for onboard aircraft systems — including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental. She has also spent time in the technology consulting industry building customer software solutions. Leigh has a technical background with a B.S/M.S. in Computer Science, combined with acquired soft skills, which led her to HTC where she first worked as a Developer Evangelist on the HTC developer relations team. She is now fully entrenched in the startup world at Cyanogen. She is a founding member of MarketShare.

Shad Schmutz

Lead Chef Instructor at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Seattle

Shad is currently Chief Instructor at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Seattle. He hails originally from Kansas City where he was Owner and Executive Chef of Simply Catering. He then worked as Executive Chef at Bistro Kids where he lead the Farm 2 School program at Bishop Ward High School & Donnelly College, which partners with local farmers and food producers to improve the health of school children through the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, grass fed meats, and hormone-free milk in their school lunch program.

Max Brown

Coordinated Campaign Director at Washington State Democrats

Max Brown has established himself as a major force in labor and community organizing in Washington State. Most recently he served as Campaign Director for Organizing for Washington where he designed and led the entire statewide campaign effort for federal and state level races in the 2014 election. Max has also served as the Northwest Regional Outreach Director & Statewide Labor Outreach Coordinator for U.S. Senator Patty Murray. Max is currently the Coordinator Campaign Director for the Washington State Democrats.

Wayne Lau

Executive Director at Rainier Valley Community Development Fund

Wayne has been a resident in Seattle since 1956 and is a graduate of Rainier Beach High School. He has a 35 year plus career in commercial real estate lending and small business lending. He was founding executive of a local community commercial bank which had a strong niche and market focus on immigrant entrepreneurs and real estate investors. Wayne has served as Treasurer and board member of the International District Chinatown Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDPDA). Currently, he is Executive Director of Rainier Valley Community Development Fund and a director on the board of Seattle Goodwill Industries.
